Feeling Creative...

Lately, I've just been drawing and painting...no real direction, but just for fun. It's really therapeutic for my soul...but it's killing my sleep (since the only time I can find to do art is after the boys are in bed...)!

Been feeling the drawing on the dictionary pages!
Saw a similar idea on pinterest, but wanted to try it with my own style - I like it!

Made this card - thought it turned out really cool!

My husband wanted an artsy cell phone cover like mine, but with zentangles. He likes wolves and lighthouses - he picked the wolf! (But only after making me redo it because the head pattern looked like little eyeballs...)

Simple, but fun!

Like the idea and the quote, but this turned out meh...

My students made these scrap paper birds, so I made these canvas pieces as a gift for our classroom art docent. They turned out so cute I think I'll make some for our house too :)

In Loving Memory...

My Nana died at the end of March, and her funeral was April 20th. I couldn't attend because I live on the other side of the world from that part of my family. And even though I couldn't be there in person a lot with her, she has had more of a hand in shaping me than I think even she knew.

My Nana was an artist. She loved sketching and painting and practicing and coloring and everything else about creating art for others. Her favorite seemed to be watercolors of buildings and structures that she would see when she was out and about. I remember she used to bring a sketchbook, and even a travel size watercolor set, with her whenever we would be on holiday somewhere. I don't quite tote my art supplies down to the ocean's shore like she did, but I do pack them with me whenever I travel, just in case there may be time to do some art. That's on you Nana :)

One of my fondest memories of my Nana was when I was in high school and we had visited England in October (don't know why I remember the month...), but I had to bring some school work with me, and one of my projects was to paint a still life of some red chile peppers. My Nana drove us out to her art club that she attended with all these real, fancy-pants artists. And she showed off my painting as if it was up to scratch - she was so proud of my ugly little acrylic attempt (painting is not my favorite...) and I remember feeling like I could do anything I wanted after that. That's on you Nana :)

I have every paint set, every sketchbook, every drawing, and hand-made card that she's ever sent me. It's hard to feel close to someone when you live so far away, but she made sure to nurture that connection between us and I won't forget those feelings and memories. I try to draw and use art in my classroom, and at home whenever I can. I also try to hand-make every card I can fit in, and have something that I've created on the cards I send out to show people I love them. That's on you Nana :)

So, on April 20th I had an art memorial in my Nana's memory. I didn't end up doing watercolors, or drawing buildings, or even doing a portrait of her...which were my initial intentions. Instead I drew this picture of my favorite animal. And I just remembered my Nana as the woman who taught me how to see the world through the eyes of an artist, and who inspired me to always make time for my drawings. There's nothing quite like it...And it's partly because of you Nana, that I'm up until 1AM most nights trying to just finish one more thing and get some of my pieces done with my crazy boys who don't ever nap. I love you, and pray that I will get to draw again with you in Heaven one day.

In loving memory of Carolyn Gill.

Day 13, 14, and 15 of the December Photo Challenge

Well, it looks like being caught up on my art blog didn't last too long. But hey! It's December, which is family time! And my little niece was born this week so I was cuddling sweet babies, and visiting with family instead of downloading pictures. But I did manage to take the pictures - that's not the time consuming part...So, bonus! You get a 3 for 1 day!

Day 13 Theme: Star

We got a new star for our tree this year, as our old one wasn't working anymore! We had this great metal one that could light up if you plugged it in...but the cord was too short to reach to the outlets, and the prongs were a weird size so as not to fit into any of the light strings we had...so it never got lit up!

Day 14 Theme: Recipe

A fitting theme since we had just made sugar cookies with my family the night before. This translates to my mom and I making cookies and trying to keep them away from my dad, brother, husband, and son long enough to fill up the cookie plate!

And the theme for Day 15 (today) was shopping!

I did go grocery shopping today...but I don't usually lug my camera around Costco (especially, since it was bought there, and that'd be awkward). So I took a picture of all our wrapped gifts so far - which represents all the shopping we've been doing the last few weeks!

For a Friend...

I have a friend who drinks Starbucks coffee religiously (well, quite a few friends who do!). So I drew this card for her, even though she probably doesn't collect ATCs. I'm sending it out tomorrow, and I can't wait to hear what she thinks of it, haha!

Family Tree

In June my husband's grandparents celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary! I was asked to create a family tree as a gift. This was the final result!

This was a rough draft of the version we went with for the final piece. His parents liked it so much they framed it for their house!

It was very well received, and made me feel very talented indeed to be so praised! But the look on Nona's face when she saw it made all the hard work worth it!

Father's Day and Birthdays!

I made this zentangle basketball as a Father's Day gift.

I made the cupcakes or my niece's birthday, and the trucks were for my nephew!

Art as a Gift

I found this great frame at Michael's and made some of my inked sunflowers as a Mother's Day Gift.
